Passing on the Blessing

I come from privilege. I was born in a 1st world country, I'm in the ethnic majority, my parents are still happily married, both have university degrees and my university degree was entirely paid for [albeit not by my parents]. I'm sure if I looked, I could find what tiny percentage of the population this puts me in, but that's not really the point. The point is, while I have clearly lived life standing on the shoulders of giants, I'm wondering how to responsibly pass this on to my children. As Mark and I prepare to close on our forever home I'm particularly aware of, and utterly humbled by, the blessings we've been handed. In the past year, I've been struck anew by the burden of debt that envelopes the lives of many of our peers. These are married couples who both work and yet can't afford to purchase a home, or upgrade to a larger home, because their monthly college-loan payments are larger than our new mortgage payment will be. Eating to Thrive: the post for those who've asked

"Do graham crackers count as treats?" Every morning for the last week or so, my four year old has asked me, "Is it still  Lent? I don't like this part of Lent." We're not quite two weeks into this penitential season, and the removal of treats has been a millstone around her neck. I can relate; I have a sweet tooth the size of Texas , Alaska , North America. I get asked frequently what I've changed, how I eat, and comments on the weight I've lost, so I thought I'd go ahead and write a post about it for anyone that wants to know. However, before I launch into that, I want to stress that I'm firmly in the 80/20 camp of healthy eating. For example, yesterday we celebrated the "mini Easter" of a Sunday in Lent by eating ice cream and Cadbury mini eggs. And do you know who ate the most? Me. Dear February, do you remember when...

I knew, at the time, that we were enjoying a particularly spectacular Autumn. Now, in the dreary depths of Winter, I'm so grateful I grabbed my newest toy and captured a few glimpses of those days. I share these, many of which have already been shared elsewhere, in case you, like me, need a little reminder of what color and life look like. And, in case you were thinking that I, as a newbie photographer, have some special skill, I give you this, um, "portrait" of my kiddos. It's all sorts of awful, but I especially love that in an attempt to get a more natural smile from someone, I must've said, "Show me your teeth." Thank you, Lucy, for obliging.
